New computer modeling of the human brain could provide insight into how the brain develops complex cognitive abilities. These advances could just as much make it possible to advance research on neural artificial intelligence.
This model defines neural development according to three hierarchical levels of information processing:
1/ The first level is a sensorimotor level: It allows the exploration of the internal activity of the brain.
2/ The second level is a cognitive level: It allows to analyze how the brain combines these patterns in a contextual way.
3/ The third level is the conscious level: It defines the brain by allowing it to use learned patterns, not available through perception, but palpable through memory.
This modeling is an adaptation of neuroscience to artificial intelligence. It uses biological mechanisms and defines “cognitive architectures”.
An artificial consciousness could one day be achieved if we manage to model a social dimension in it.
